Silver Award
On Monday Sarah received her Silver Award for girl scouts along with three other girls in her troop. We had a dinner at Serb Hall followed by an award presentation. Sarah got her name announced and her leader presented her with her award. It was for the entire GSWISE service unit, so there were girls there from all over the area. Pabst Mansion
Alison got to go the Pabst Mansion today for Girl Scouts. I've always wanted to go see it. I remember seeing it years ago on America's Castles on A&E, and I used to go past it every day on my way to class when I was going to Marquette.
A couple of days ago one of the local news stations did a story on how they decorate it for the holidays and the curator said it takes them a month to get all the Christmas decorations up. Ali really liked it. Her favorite rooms were the Nutcracker room, two of the children's rooms, and the servant's dining room.
The Nutcracker room had what seemed liked 1000 nutcrackers (Alison's guess). Right now she has a thing for nutcrackers, they are her favorite holiday decoration. She liked the servant's dining room because she thought it was just cool that there were two dining rooms in the house. "You just never see that" is what she told me. And she thought the big doll house in children's room was also very cool, though it was in a big glass box apparently.
After the tour, they had a craft where they made paper dolls and a snack... turnips. The person at the Pabst Mansion thought they should experience what it would have been like to have a snack from the 1800's. Ali said that she doesn't think she would like snacks from back then. Then they got to have their real snack. After their real snack, they got a chance to use the bathroom, which was like it would have been in the period, except that the plumbing actually worked now. Ali thought that the bathroom was sort of silly, but it was the bathroom that people used when they were coming to meet the Pabsts so in that way she thought it was sort of neat.

He and Me Event
Alison had a “Me and My Guy” event for scouts yesterday, a father-daughter bowling event. It was an event for the entire service unit so Ali had the opportunity to see some of her old friends from Riverside. Actually, Sarah could have gone too, but she had a PA workshop to go to, and wouldn't have been back until after 1:00, so she opted to just skip it.
We got put on the very last lane with Ali’s new friends Emma and Paige. We got two games of bowling plus pizza and soda. Ali started off each of the games with a strike. In fact, in the first game we bowled, Ali got a strike and two spares in three of the first four frames. She ended up beating me in the first game 109-92. The second game, I ended up with a better score 119-96. I had to use a little heavier ball than I wanted because I couldn’t find a ball that would fit my hand. No excuses though. I was humbled being beat by an eight year old. But I will say, real bowling is much different than playing on the Wii.
When we were all done, I gave Ali $5 worth of token for playing skeeball in the arcade. She had a couple of pretty big games, but for the most part just got a few tickets per game. Then when it was time to cash in, all she wanted was candy, blow pops and bubble gum.
Ali had a really fun time bowling and visiting with her old friends, and her new ones. The alley gave us a couple of coupons for free games too so maybe we'll go back again.

Girl Scout Week
This week was girl scout day camp week. The theme this year was Lights, Camera, Action. Again this year the girls did not get the chance to design the Camp Patch, which is sort of a bummer. I really liked when Sarah was able to do it. This year was the latest camp had been since Sarah had been a scout, and I think it was because they couldn’t get anyone to volunteer to be camp director. By the time they had someone, all the weeks had been reserved. As a result, it was HOT, and because of all the rain we had this summer, the camp was infested with mosquitoes!
Sarah was a PAIT this year, which stands for Program Assistant In Training. Next year she will be a Program Assistant, or PA. As a PAIT Sarah shadowed the PA’s, learning what she was going to have to do for next year. Tuesday night was Sarah’s overnight, and it left a little to be desired. She found out that the tent cabins they were supposed to be sleeping in were full of mice, which meant they couldn’t sleep there, and instead they had to go sleep on Sunset Ridge.
Alison’s group this year was about half the size it had been in the past which was good I think. The fewer girls there are the more the leaders are able to control them. Kris went one day with Ali’s troop this year. It was good because she was able to help Alison with the mosquitoes. The first couple of days of camp the girls were eaten alive. Alison must have had 50 bites on her arms and legs. And she even had them on her face. They were horrible this year with all the rain we had. We learned that the bug spray needs to go on BEFORE the sunscreen in order for it to be effective. Plus, the pump spray bottles are not as effective as the aerosol cans. We fixed this Wednesday and Thursday. I think Alison said she got bitten three times in the last two days as opposed to the fifty+ bites she got the first two days.
The same happened to Sarah. The building they slept in on their overnight had mosquitoes on the inside, and they (Sarah and the rest of the PAITS) got bitten up pretty good while they slept.)
And mud and dirt? Every day the girls came home looking just a mess. We ended up just throwing out socks because they were so wet and muddy, they just wouldn’t come clean.
The girls ended their camp this year a day early, because of our vacation. We are heading to Florida Friday morning. Hopefully next year’s camp experience will be a little better.

Girl Scout Awards
Sarah and some of the other girls in her troop attended the “Ceremony of Achievement” last Thursday Night to receive their Bronze Awards. They were the only Juniors there, the rest were girls who are in high school or adult members who were receiving awards.
Sarah and the other girls organized a blood drive last winter at Riverside, and also raised money for materials to build small, portable bridges to be used in girl scout bridging ceremonies. They built the bridges, painted them, and stenciled them with “Girl Scouts”. (2) are being presented to the Girl Scout Council, and the remaining bridge is going to stay at Riverside.
Even Alison got to help out being the official “greeter”, welcoming people as they entered and handing out programs.

Bucks Game
We got to go to a Bucks game over the weekend. The girls each got a free ticket for hitting the goal for selling Girl Scout Cookies so it was just Kris and I that needed to buy tickets. Boy, I remember now why I don’t go to Bucks’ games any more. We ended up sitting in the upper deck, and the cost of the seats was almost $30 each. So if I was going to take the girls, the tickets alone would have been $120, plus the parking money, plus food, drinks etc. It would have been a good $200 if not for the free tickets. Here was the view we had.
But Alison liked it, Sarah didn’t really care. Ali actually asked when she could start playing basketball after watching the state girls final that Uncle Dave was coaching in. Overall the game was good, the Bucks won. Then again, they were playing one of the 4 or 5 teams that has a record worse than Milwaukee.
I should add that it was kids night as well, and the Bucks were giving away baseball caps. After the game, we had vouchers to go down onto the Bradley Center floor and shoot a free throw. Kris and I didn’t really care, but we thought the girls would think it was cool, so we stuck around after the game. By the time we got down to do it, it was about 10:45 PM. Alison actually was saying she was tired and wanted to leave, but we stuck around and I think she was happy that we did.

Scout Bowling
Saturday we had the Riverside girl scout bowling event at AMF Lanes. Alison was looking forward to it, Sarah, not so much. Alison really loves bowling. She plays it on the Wii and will actually average around 200. I have only beaten her once since Christmas. Well Saturday's bowling was of the bumper variety, but she still did a pretty good job. She scored a 109, which was tops for her group.
